How I Lost $2000 in One Night

It was dated back in 2022. Friday was a day like no other day. I woke up as usual and prepared myself for my daily routine. I took a hot shower.brushed my  teeth and wore my jeans, a baggy T-shirt and a white sport shoe. I was ready to go to work until I received a congratulation message from a lottery company I used to bet on.

It was around 10 o'clock. I hurriedly ran to the bus station to catch up with the bus. You could see me jumping and clapping my hands due to happiness. I wanted to go and meet my mother who stays in the upper town and inform her about my victory. She had always condemned me for gabbling ever since I was in college, but now was really my day.

In about 20 minutes or so, a bus approached and I waved at it to stop. I boarded and sat next to the driver. He was a fat guy with a protruding belly, Jordan shaved and had very big beards around his face. They were trimmed neatly and a toothpick in his mouth. I was nodding my head to the rhythm of the beats of afro music. "You know the song," he asked." Rema is my favorite musician." I answered.

It is now around 12 o'clock. The bus stopped and another customer boarded. The man seemed confused and unsettled. He was always on his phone calling and texting. We are almost in town now. "Pesa apo mbele!" The conductor demanded the bus fare. " I am paying with the phone," I replied." ooh seven four...nine two" he read his number.

We alighted and stood by the shop as it was raining heavily. All business was at a stand still. You could barely see no one moving apart from the umbrella hawkers who were selling umbrellas and shower capes. " How much is the umbrella?" a young brown ready mid thirties asked. "three soo for the short one and six soo for the big one" the man answered. "Give me the short one," she said.

It's 3 o'clock and the rain is still raining heavily. We are a group of about 30 people. I removed my phone and made a call to my parents to inform them that I would be late due to the heavy rainfall. Thoughts started going round my head. Why don't you go somewhere quiet and less noisy and wait for the rain to stop?.

"Excuse me" I excused myself as I paved away from the thick crowd. I ran to the next street on the road and hit a corner. There is a restaurant nearby. I went inside and gave myself a chair at the corner.

"How can I help you?" asked the waiter. " Give me a chicken fry and a soda." I replied. It is now 6 o'clock and there is now sign the rain is going to stop any time soon. The thunderstorms are 'yelling' very loud and sharp lightning flashing now and then. Just before I had a bite of my chicken the very same lady we had sheltered together in the shop got in. She had a smile on her face as she put her phone back in her handbag. she sat just next to me but on the next table.

She ordered hot tea with two snacks.

I enjoyed my chicken but as I was about to finish she poked me and asked " you are a one party animal?" I assumed I didn't hear her but she was directly looking at me. "No no. I just cleaved for a chicken." I joked. She laughed as she approached my table. She sat against me and introduced herself. I asked if I could order her something but she insisted she was fine with a soda.

I called the waiter and requested a barrel of wine. She came with two glasses and we threw ourselves to the party. It is 8 o'clock and the rain is no longer pouring. She said she was in no hurry so we can enjoy ourselves for  a few hours. We are on the fifth barrel and we are still asking for more."Sir we need you to pay for the bill first before we add anything else" the waiter requested. " How much is the bill? I asked. The lady showed me the bill she picked from the glass and read 12k. I had to pay through the phone. I put the digits and everything was set.

We stayed for a little more time. We are still making jokes and laughing like people who have known each other for a long time. It's 12 o'clock. We are drunk but we can control ourselves. My lady has shifted her seat and come to my seat, we are drinking as we hold each other's hands. Just as we were about to finish our last glass, Two men came straight to our table and called the lady by her name. "Hilder!?". I released her hand quickly and pretended nothing was going on. The other men held me on my neck and asked. "What are you doing with my wife?." A cold sweat started flowing from my back down to the waist. I started shaking."Twende ukaelezee mbele" he said. He dragged me outside as I was drunk and I couldn't talk properly.

They had parked their car in front of the restaurant. they pushed me inside threatening to kill me if i had touched the lady. I was crying for help and mercy but there was no one outside. It's late 1 o'clock. My phone rang like a thousand times but I couldn't hear it. The man put his hands inside my pocket and removed my phone. He ordered me to unlock it. I refused to submit to their wish but this just made things worse. He dropped a loud bang on my cheek that for a moment I forgot where I was and my drunkenness dropped for a while.

"This guy is very wicked. He forced himself on me.He came to my table and offered me a drink. I refused but he kept insisting" the lady said as she started crying. I couldn't believe my ears. The man was still fuming and preparing to add another blow to me. "I will open, I will open" I pleaded. I drew the pattern and the phone unlocked. "Now let's see how much you got, this makes you think you can buy my wife," he said. The other guy was still driving. I couldn't tell where we were heading as we were in the back seat with him and their car had tinted windows. I couldn't see outside.

The guy went straight to my phone Mpesa and checked the balance. I had already given him the pin. He smiled and said you are finished. "pull the brakes '' he asked for the car to stop."we are dumping him here" he said "no no don't do that, let him go." the driver said. "I am about to give you an option and you need to reconsider your answer cause I'm only asking once. Do you understand?" the cycle asked. I nodded my head as I said  yes.

"You only have two options, you transfer the amount and go home or you refuse and you die" he whispered in my ears. I started crying calling my mother. "I wanna leave" I answered as I crowed like a small baby pleading for mercy. The guy smiled and said " well I assume that means to transfer the amount as he beeps the numbers and deleted the message." He threw the phone on the ground as he entered the car. Now I hope you've learned your lesson. The guy left as he threatened to kill me if he ever heard of that story with somebody else.

They left me in the middle of nowhere at 9 o'clock. I called my mothers phone that rang just once. She must be dying of fear of where I was. I lied to her about how I was drugged and stole everything I had. She cried uncontrollably and told me to look around and see if I could recognize where I was. Luckily I was able to read a tall building name and tell her. She requested I stay where I am. She is coming for me. I went home empty handed and very shameful of myself. I haven't told anyone of the story due to the threats and I love to keep my soul with me and I don't want to be dead.
